What is Genre?

The word Genre is French for 'kind' or 'type'.
If a group of media texts had a similar structure or pattern of elements then this might be a link to Genre.

When looking at a magazine say, Mens health, normally there would be a theme such as bold masculine colours such as Red, black and would also have a main picture of a Male on the front cover suggesting that the Genre of this magazine is for males.

Genres are often broken down into groups called Sub-Genres. For example, a type of film genre is Romance. This could be put into Sub-Genres such as historical romance, contempory romance, teen romance, fantasy romance and romantic suspense.
